Ever since I came up with the design of the Kimberly dress, I knew I wanted to create a special version for the upcoming holidays. I had a very specific idea in my mind of how I wanted it to look like and for weeks I was on a quest to find the perfect fabric. And I did! So today I wanted to talk to you about this dress. The winter floral dress of dreams.
The weirdest thing happens to me as soon as the weather gets colder. Although I wear a TON of floral dresses during the summer, my winter wardrobe is much more monochromatic. And sometimes that makes me sad. I love colors and beautiful prints and having a floral dress to wear in the winter is just so amazing!
Dark floral prints were very on trend last year and they seem to be again this season. I’m not usually affected by trends when it comes to my personal style, but this one really works for me, haha! I found this beautiful print on Spoonflower and I won’t lie: it was extremely hard to choose among the hundreds of prints available on their website. In the end I went for this one for 2 reasons: number 1, the print wasn’t directional, so it would be pefrect for the full skirt of the Kimberly dress. Number 2, the colors of the flowers happen to be my favorites for winter. Burgundy, light pink and green… what more can a girl ask for?
In regards to the quality, I chose to print this design on their “Silky Faille” fabric. Silky Faille is a slinky 100% polyester fabric printed using ecologically-safe transfer sublimation inks that provide vibrant color and strong wash durability. It features a smooth, matte finish and has the most beautiful drape, it’s soft and looks so luxurious but it was in fact very easy to work with. At first I was afraid that I would have to treat it like silk, but no, it was just perfect! I washed it a couple of times already and it hasn’t shrunk. The colors have stayed vibrant and didn’t bleed, which is always good as I can wash my dress with other clothes in the future.
As for the pattern I chose, as I told you above, this is my newest release, the Kimberly dress. However, I decided to hack it a little bit (you know me!) and add flutter sleeves instead of the sleeves included in the pattern. It was very very easy to make this modification and I have a tutorial for it HERE in case you want to try it yourselves.
I didn’t insert pockets nor made the tie belt, but I added the panel at the bottom because I think it adds a special touch to the skirt.
I’m so happy that I added this dress in my wardrobe. I can’t wait to wear it on Christmas Eve and feel like a princess 🙂
I hope you enjoyed seeing this version and that I inspired you to add a different style of sleeves to your Kimberly dress as well. Don’t forget to have a look at Spoonflower’s massive selection of high quality fabrics. I guarantee you that they will have any print you can think of!
Until the next time, happy sewing!
