It might be May, but the weather is playing all kinds of games with us! One day it’s freezing cold and the next the sun is shining! I’ve been feeling so fed up with my autumn/winter closet and so anxious to start wearing my summer clothes. To compensate for the lack of warmth, I decided to start sewing some new clothes including the lovely summer dress that I’m going to show you today.
If you’ve watched my Spoonflower Haul video, you already know that I had picked a couple of cotton sateen fabrics in bold prints to create a skirt and a dress. This lemon print fabric screamed “summer dress” to me the minute I saw it on their website! So I decided to create a mashup of two of my patterns: the Lisa dress and the Kimberly dress.
I wanted my dress to be as cute as possible, but also choose a pattern without too many seams in order to not interrupt the beautiful print. For the bodice, I used the Lisa dress pattern and went for the adorable scalloped sleeves. This detail is my favorite part of the design and I honestly can’t get enough of them! The sleeves look so different than anything else I’ve ever seen, they are so cute and suit my personal style perfectly!
For the skirt part, I used the Kimberly dress pattern. It comes with a half circle skirt (while the Lisa comes with an A-line skirt) that is perfect for twirling around. I chose not to add the panel at the bottom to make my dress a bit shorter than the original Kimberly.
As for the size, I went for my usual size 10 and made no alterations to the patterns, apart from shortening the bodice by 2,5 cm (an alteration that I always have to make). Since the Lisa and Kimberly are designed to be interchangeable, adding the different skirt to the bodice was a breeze!
I’m soooo in love with my new dress! The fabric is gorgeous with such vibrant colors and since I am a sucker for lemon prints, you can imagine how much I like it. The fabric was a dream to work with as well. I chose to print the design on Spoonflower’s cotton sateen ultra, a 100% certified organic cotton with a soft hand and subtle sheen, as it is described on their website. It washed up beautifully, the colors remained vibrant and didn’t leak. In fact, it was so easy to sew and press that reminded me how much I enjoy working with cotton fabrics 🙂
I can’t wait for the weather to be warmer so I can wear my new dress every day! I couldn’t have picked a better project to kick start my summer sewing and I definitely recommend you having a look on the Spoonflower website to find a beautiful print to create your own special dress!
I hope you like it as much as I do! Until the next time, happy sewing!
