Hmmm, that’s a weird title for a blog post, isn’t it? However, it will all make sense, I promise you! Today I’m here to share a little story about a jersey top, my love affair with a lemon fabric and what Jane Fonda and I have in common 😛
This little story goes back to a couple of years ago, when I discovered the Art Gallery fabrics (by the way, this blog post is NOT done as a collaboration with them or with anyone else, I just really do like their products). I immediately fell in love with their beautiful prints and although they are a bit pricey, I couldn’t resist picking up a few of them. The very first thing I made was a Lily top and I also used them to make my samples for the launch of the Samantha dress. Both the rayon and the cotton jersey were superb, truly superb!
But there was a specific print that I always wanted to get and it’s no other than this lemon fabric. I find it so gorgeous and so unique so naturally I had to get it. When it was time to make the samples for the Sheona dress and top launch, I decided to get it and make a dress with it. This dress had been worn soooo much over the summer and I can’t wait to have it back in my wardrobe.
Luckily, I had a bit of fabric left over from that project, enough to squeeze a Sheona top out of it. And so I did! I made a slightly modified version to wear during the colder months by lengthening the top, lengthening the sleeves and adding cuffs. Perfect! (The tutorial for adding cuffs to your Sheona can be found HERE)
This top was made back in autumn, I don’t even remember when and unfortunately I had forgotten all about it. It was buried under a pile of jersey tops in my tiny, yet overflowing wardrobe, and I didn’t wear it once all winter. Well, up until now because… Jane Fonda reminded me of its existence!
Before I explain, let me tell you that I am a HUGE fan of her. I consider her not only an amazing actress, but the epitomy of style, elegance and a great example of aging gracefully. My love affair with her started a few years ago when I discovered her show “Grace and Frankie” on Netflix, where she plays along my other favorite actress, Lily Tomlin. Naturally, the minute the new season aired, I had to binge watch all the episodes and guess what! On episode 1, Grace is wearing a shirt made out of my lemon fabric. I swear it’s true!
We were watching that episode with Jim, while being down with a stomach bug and lying in bed for a whole weekend, and the minute I saw the shirt I started screaming! I know, I know! But the thing is, this has never happened to me. I have never recognized a fabric on TV before so it was like a huge achievement/discovery, haha! I realize how silly it sounds, but the seamstresses out there can relate. Anyway, the shirt was just beautiful. I mean, they even pattern matched the lemons in the front. Respect!
Long story short, after I saw this top on Jane Fonda, I remembered about my Sheona top and embarked on a quest to find it. I was successful and thrilled to have it back in my wardrobe. There’s nothing better than a colorful top to brighten up a rainy day, like the ones we’ve been having lately, am I right?
I hope you enjoyed this little story and please do tell me if something similar has ever happened to you. I’d love to hear!
Until the next time, happy sewing,
