Today I’ll tell you a little story. My fiance, Jim, has been asking me to make him some clothes for several months now. In the beginning I was extremely excited that he trusted me enough to wear clothes that I sewed for him, so I caved. I made him a Christmas sweater, which he loved, and then a cardigan, which unfortunately wasn’t to his taste, because the fabric I used for its toile was a shiny black stretch fabric that didn’t look very good. Don’t even ask me if he understood the concept of a toile. He still makes fun of this cardigan to this day! After that I felt a bit disheartened and I hsaid to myself that I’ll never bother making anything for other people, except for my dear mom who always appreciates what I sew for her 🙂
But, as soon as the weather warmed up, Jim kept asking me to make him some T-shirts. You can probably guess what happened. I told him that I would, but only if he promised that he’d like them or at least that he’d pretend to, haha. I’m kidding. Sort of 😛
Anyway, I figured out that T-shirts are fairly simple and fast to make, so even if he didn’t like them, I wouldn’t feel like I wasted my time. But in this case I was better prepared. I thought that the only way to make sure that Jim would like the fabrics I’d use, would be to ask an expert for his advice. So I got in touch with Mark from Girl Charlee and asked him for directions on what types of fabrics I should pick for Jim’s T-shirt. When I read his e-mail, I was speechless. He had taken the time to send me a very detailed list of not only fabric recommendations, but also patterns that I could use to make the T-shirts! Talk about excellent customer service! I then asked Jim to take a look at all the suitable fabrics and patterns and make his choices. A few days later, two parcels of beautiful fabrics arrived at my front door.
I thought I’d give you the links to what we chose, in case you are looking for fabrics for the men in your life. But if you want to take a better look at them, make sure you watch my new vlog, where I talk in more detail about each one of them.
So, here are the fabrics and patterns that I’m going to use:
As for the fabrics, here are his choices:
- the first one is this fuchsia pink cotton spandex knit that I will turn into a Metro T-shirt. I am thinking of adding a patch pocket in the front as well.
- this gorgeous cotton jersey blend with palm trees is also destined to become a Metro T-shirt.
- then I’m going to make him two raglan sleeved T-shirts using the Simplicity 8613 pattern. The first one will have a grey bodice, red sleeves and a red neckband. The second one will have the fabric with the crosses in the bodice and black sleeves. Click on each photo to be directed to the fabric.
And last but not least, I got 2 fabrics for myself, but if there are any leftovers, I’ll try to whip up something for Jim as well.
I’m really excited to start cutting into these! I’ve actually already cut one of each pattern to sew it next week in order to see if there are any fit issues before cutting all the other fabrics as well. If you have any tips about sewing for men that you want to share or any questions that you want to ask, please leave a comment below.
Let’s hope this is a successful project and that I’ll have some pretty pictures to share with you soon.
Until the next time, happy sewing,
