I’ve been in a really weird place in my work life recently, where everything is changing so rapidly and sometimes all I need is some time to wrap my head around the current situation. Being a workaholic, I’ve always found it hard to disconnect and put myself above my job, especially because I am self employed. Everything depends on me if I want to make a living out of my business. There are never breaks, I rarely go on vacation and my phone is the extension of my arm, pretty much all day.
Starting the new adventure of SMYLY meant that I had to put one more huge thing on my list of tasks and for the previous four months I’ve been working crazy hours to make sure that stay on top of my never ending to-do list. And although I love every minute of it, the stress is getting to me and I really feel the need to take it a bit easier and take care of Athina for a little while.
I haven’t figured out the way to do that yet, but I know one thing that will definitely help me: some fun sewing. Don’t get me wrong, sewing the new patterns for SMYLY is such an exciting thing to do and by the end you feel only pride and joy of what you’ve accomplished. But I was looking at my sewing planner the other day and everything I sewed in the last four months has been either toiles and samples for SMYLY or clothes for my e-book ‘Sewing your dream wardrobe’. I didn’t do any sewing just because I felt like it, I sewed because I had to.
In addition to that, having to make toiles in the first stages of designing a new pattern is a whole different ball game. You sew to assess the fit and report back on what changes need to be made. You also waste fabric if things don’t always work out the first time and then you have to go back to the drawing board and make new samples and start all over again. As exciting as it is, because I really do love that process of creating a pattern, it can also be a bit daunting.
So I said to myself that I need to rediscover the fun of sewing before I start to resent it. And now that the season is changing and we have the opportunity to make new clothes, I thought it was the perfect timing to plan a collection for summer. For that reason I’ve been doing so much fabric and pattern shopping lately that I had to share my hauls with you.
Before you judge me, let me tell you that I haven’t bought any fabric for personal sewing in about 6 months and the same goes for patterns (apart from what I was given for collaborations with the companies that I work with). So it was about time I caved, haha! I’m not too judgmental about this though, because everything I bought was either for SMYLY samples or for the new summer collection I’m going to sew. I tried to be really intentional and I think I did very well. These purchases will last me for the entire season!
I won’t be talking in detail about each piece in this blog post, because there is a whole video about my fabric and pattern haul on my YouTube channel. So, if you want to have a look, click below.
I didn’t tell you all my sewing plans for these items, because next week I will reveal my plans for the summer collection I’ll be working on. So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, if you want to get your hands on the fabrics that I showed you (the ones that are available online) click on the links below.

Until the next time, happy sewing 🙂
