One of my main goals for 2017 was to make a coat! I was so determined to do it before the year ended and I’m extremely happy I succeeded! So, today’s post will be all about my Sew Over It Cocoon Coat!
This pattern was released in December by the SOI team as a part of Lisa Comfort’s new magazine. It was available in both printed and PDF form. I got in in PDF and printed it at home (it wasn’t a huge file, but I’m used to sticking pdfs anyway!). The coat itself has a very interesting cocoon shape and a lovely collar detail. It is meant to be a bit oversized and has no closures. You can add welt pockets if you want as well (I didn’t, simply to make my life easier!)
For my Sew Over It Cocoon coat I used a red wool fabric from the local fabric store. It is medium to heavy weight, I took the risk to wash it in the washing machine and it came out just fine and it sewed up very easily. I did some research on wool fabrics before I started and it turns out there is a specific way to press them while sewing. If you don’t know how to do this, make sure you watch my video here.
For the lining, I used a fabric again from a local fabric store. It is actually a store that specializes in fur making supplies. The town we live has a tradition in making fur coats (sadly not eco-friendly) so there are many shops selling supplies to the manufacturers. It is a proper lining fabric that is antistatic and I chose a very bold print with butterflies.
As I said above, I had never made a coat before in my life. My first piece of outwear was my Chic Cape. My first option was the Sew Over It Chloe coat, but I decided to go for the Cocoon instead as it seemed easier. And it was! I really took my time with this make, being very precise while cutting and sewing. I measured every little thing the instructions said (I know you are meant to always do that, but sometimes I’m bored) and I enjoyed all the steps. The pattern is very easy, apart from the collar where you have to pay some attention to get everything right! I would definitely recommend it as a first coat!
The Sew Over It Cocoon coat is meant to have a relaxed fit. As it is a bit oversized, it makes it easier to fit. I had no major issues so I didn’t make alterations. I went for my usual size 10 and I am very satisfied with the result.
I LOVE my red coat! I have worn it so much over the last month and I always feel stylish in it! There’s something to wearing red that makes me feel ultra glamorous, haha! My only concern is that it doesn’t have any closures so it’s not ideal for a very cold day. I didn’t think it will annoy me that much, but it did! Overall, I’m very happy with it though and I definitely want to make another one!
You can see it on me on camera, if you watch the special video I made about in on my channel. Here it is!
