A few weeks ago we received a wedding invitation from a friend and the day before her wedding she was throwing a pool party. The dress code for it was “navy style”. As you probably noticed by looking at my outfit photos, I love wearing blue and navy style clothes are one of my favorites! I could have chosen something from my wardrobe, but I really wanted to sew something new, just for the occassion.
I had sooo much trouble choosing what to make and I ended up ordering various fabrics. The truth is if I had more time I would have sewn up 2-3 different clothes to have choices, but I ended up running out of time. I made the outfit you see the morning of the party…
I decided to go with a safe pick and wear something both elegant and cozy so I made a Sew Over It ultimate pencil skirt paired with a simple silk cami. I made two pencils skirts during the past few months and I knew the pattern suited me. I chose a navy and white polka dot cotton fabric (the one I also used for my Betty dress if you remember) for the skirt and a plain white viscose for the top.
The skirt fabric is a bit sheer so I had to wear a slip underneath. I went for a size 12 which was perfect for me (my first ultimate pencil skirt was a size 10 and is super super tight!) and didn’t have any problems with the construction. For the silk cami, as it was my first try with this pattern, I went for a size 14, to accomondate my 36 inch bust. As the cami has no darts I was afraid it wouldn’t suit me if it was too tight. It ended up a bit looser than I was going for and I shaved off a few cm from the side seams. I also didn’t use any facings because I was worried they would show from the right side because of the lightweight fabric, so I made my own bias bianding for the neckline and the armholes. It’s a great and comfy top to wear but next time I think I’ll go for a size 12.
Overall, I was very happy with my navy style outfit! I had lots of fun at the party and we danced all night, it was a lovely evening!
So, what do you think of my choices? I’d love to hear!
