I have said many times that I love skirts! I could wear skirts everyday and never get bored! That’s why I try to sew as many different patterns as I can and try out different versions.
One of the patterns that was on my #2017makenine list was the Brumby skirt by Megan Nielsen. I had seen the midi version on her blog and I immediately fell in love! So after putting it off for 2 months because I couldn’t find the perfect fabric for it, I finally made it in May!
First of all I have to mention the AMAZING instructions of this pattern. Megan couldn’t have done a better job, it felt like she was holding my hand all the way and made the construction of this skirt soooo much easier! This is such an important thing for me because I am a self taught seamstress and good instructions are always appreciated!
For my skirt I chose a soft viscose fabric that looks like a houndstooth. It’s a medium to heavy-weight fabric, very easy to work with, but it frayed like crazy! I had to overlock everything pretty much as soon as I cut the pieces. Also, I went for version 2, which is a skirt with more fullness and pockets. I opted to go for an invisible zip instead of the exposed zip that the pattern suggests just because I prefer the way it looks and I’m more experience inserting it.
As for the pockets, their construction was very easy. They are deep poskets that add such a nice detail to the skirt, but the truth is I ended up stitching them closed. That’s because my fabric was a bit heavy and the pockets were looking a bit baggy. I prefer them much better now, I’m not one of those people that put their phones in their pockets so I don’t have much use for them anyway 🙂
Also, I love the waistband, it’s a quite fitted one and it hugs my waist perfectly! I can easily tuck a T-shirt inside or wear my skirt with a cropped top like in the photos!
Overall, I totally recommend this pattern. It will be a staple in my wardrobe and I can’t wait to try all the other versions with the variations Megan suggests!
Let me know if you’ve ever made a Brumby skirt or if you want to try it soon!
