The Lulu dress was the latest release of Sew Over It’s pdf club and the minute I got the e-mail I knew I had to get this pattern. It’s something about 1960’s fashion that I find really appealing and this loose fitting shift dress is perfect for my style.
I was lucky to find the perfect fabric at my local fabric shop for this dress, a very very soft cotton in navy blue with little white flowers on it and I cut my pattern pieces last week. I chose to go with a size 12, which according to my measurements is the accurate size for me, although in the past I had always cut a size 10 for all my Sew Over It patterns. I thought I’d give size 12 a try because some patterns, like the Ultimate Shift Dress, were not so comfortable around my arms and I figured it was because I sized down to a 10.
Turns out I should have picked a size 10 because the finished dress was HUGE on me. It looked like an old-fashioned night gown, not at all flattering. So I decided to take it in at the side seams and I enden up shaving off 4 cm on each side. That did the trick and made the dress much more fitted, the way I like to wear my dresses. I realize of course that Lulu is meant to be loose fitting but size 12 was definitely very big for me. Next time I make this dress (and it will be soon) I will trace the size 10 and I think it will be perfect 🙂
As for the construction, the Lulu dress features some wonderful techniques. The key hole opening was not at all difficult to do, as for the gathered neckline it was actually pretty straightforward. I had never inserted raglan sleeves before and I loved how easy they were and how flattering they look so I’m definitely trying more patterns with raglan sleeves in the future!
It took me about 3 hours to sew this dress and that includes the alterations I had to make, so I was very happy to add a new garment to my handmade wardrobe in an evening 🙂 I wore it for the last day of Me Made May and I got lots of lovely comments on my Instagram so it looks like everyone has the same opinion as me!
Overall, I am very happy with this pattern and I totally recommend it! The instructions are amazing as with all Sew Over It patterns and I’m sure you will love it if you make it!
