This summer was definitely the “summer of dresses” for me. I made so many of them in any style and any color (although most of them were florals) and I enjoyed wearing them every day. Among my other makes, there were 2 dresses that I consider much more glamorous than the others, my Betty dress and my Elsie dress.
Both of them are patterns from Sew Over It and they are quite similar. The Betty dress has a full circle skirt and a V neckline in the back, whereas the Elsie dress has a pleated skirt and a V neckline in the front. They are vintage inspired and every time I wear one of them I feel like a princess!
I made the Elsie dress as soon as the pattern was released. I used a cotton fabric that I got from my local fabric store, it is blue with big flowers on it, perfect for this kind of dress! I cut a size 12 to accommodate for my 30 inches waist but I quickly realized it was going to be too big. I had to make lots of alterations to improve the fit and I still think it’s not perfect.
First of all, the bodice was huge on me, although my measurements are very close to the size 12. I had to remove almost 3 cm from the shoulder seams and also take it in at the side seams, so the neckline sits a bit higher on me than it should have. The dress is still a little big on my waist, which is fine because I don’t like overly fitted garments and when I wear my petticoat under it you can barely notice that!
Oh, my petticoat! I wanted to get one for soooo long and I finally found it at Perfectdress.gr, a lovely shop that sells gorgeous vintage inspired dresses and accessories! I decided to get the cream color and I’m so happy with it and its high quality. The tulle is not itchy at all, it feels amazing and it adds such elegance and style to my outfit! It’s a very full petticoat that can go under any dress (or skirt) and adds that “wow factor” to the outfit! I got so many compliments about it and I feel like a princess when I’m wearing it! The best part? I didn’t have to line the dress because the petticoat works as a lining itself! I totally recommend getting one, if you haven’t yet and Perfectdress.gr has great customer service and high quality products so don’t forget to check them out!
Overall, I’m very happy with my Elsie dress. The bodice is lined, using a combination of facings and lining, which makes it look even more professional. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. The only thing I’m confused about is the sizing, as I said. For my Betty dress I made the size 10 and it was a bit tighter than it should be and now the Elsie dress in a size 12 was way too big for me. I might have to make some alterations to the next one, maybe using a size 10 but changing the seam allowance? I’m excited to try that!
I hope you liked my Elsie dress and my new petticoat! Have you made her yet?
