This month I was lucky enough to review a wonderful pattern, the Sheath dress by the Avid Seamstress. I have never tried one of their patterns but I have heard very nice comments about them and their instructions so I was very excited to check them out myself. I was torn between the Sheath dress and the A-line dress but I ended up choosing the first one, mainly because I really liked its shape and I thought it would be perfect for the weather we are having.
My pattern arrived in one week all the way from the UK so the delivery was very very fast. I can’t say enough good things about the packaging and the branding of the Avid Seamstress. I mean, I had heard that they do a lovely job with their patterns, but I definitely wasn’t expecting such a high quality and such attention to details. The pattern envelope is very sturdy, unlike other patterns that are worn out very fast, and it includes the pattern pieces in tissue paper, the instuctions booklet, a guide on how to measure yourself and also some very nice cards explaining who the Avid Seamstress is and what they do. Last but not least, my pattern included a handwritten thank you card by Lisa herself which I really appreciated.
About the dress itself, I chose a size 3, which is a UK size 12 and it fits me perfectly. The dress is quite loose fitting and has an elasticated waist. I have never made a similar dress before and I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t like the elastic on my waist but turns out it is a lovely feature and adds a nice shaping to the whole garment.
The instructions were amazing and very easy to follow, with detailed explainations for every step and every technique. This is one of the reasons I think this pattern is perfect for beginners!
As for my fabric, I chose a viscose from my favorite fabric shop, Tsagrinos . I really liked it for this dress because it is very drapey and floaty but the only disadvantage is that it’s very see-through. I have to wear a slip under it, which makes it harder for me to wear this dress in very hot days. Anyway, I don’t mind that much, I will be making many more Sheath Dresses in the folowwing weeks so I will make a better fabric choice for those.
Overall, I am very satisfied about this dress and I definitely recommend this pattern! You will love it!
If you made a sheath dress before let me know your thoughts!
